Fences vs Walls, Which One Should You Choose?

We often use the words fence and wall to mean the same thing, but there are significant differences between the two. In this article, we will be going over the differences to help you decide which one you should choose.

Precast Concrete Fence Vs. Wall: What’s The Difference?

In some ways, fences and walls are similar. They both provide a barrier or a line between two things – buildings, properties, etc. Precast concrete fences and walls are both made of precast concrete. The process of construction and installation is very similar.

The biggest difference between the two is their width. Precast concrete walls are much thicker. Precast concrete fences are thinner.

Also, their construction is often different. Barriers that have holes or gaps, like our WOODCRETE Rails, are generally considered a fence. Those that are solid are generally considered a wall.

Which One Should You Choose?

Now that you understand the difference between a precast concrete fence and a wall, you might be wondering which one should you choose?

When To Go with A Fence

If you are looking for a flexible, durable, and affordable option, one of our precast concrete fences will work for you.

A precast concrete fence is a great option for a smaller job. A thick wall would swallow a small lot or a home. Plus, you would lose valuable space to the thicker wall.

If you were thinking about getting a wood, chain link, or vinyl fence, choosing a precast concrete fence will best serve you. At American Precast, we have options that perfectly mimic those styles without damaging wind, fire, pests, or water.

When To Go with A Wall

If you are looking for something tall that blocks sound or keeps out intruders, one of our precast concrete walls would work for you.

Because walls are thicker, they provide better noise blocking. Precast concrete is one of the best ways to block sound. If you have a busy road or noisy neighbors, go with a precast wall.

If noise blocking is at the top of your “must-have” list, you will want to go with a solid barrier – wall or fence. Any gaps or holes will allow the sound waves to flow right through.

You also want to go with a precast concrete wall if you are looking for security. A precast concrete fence will be more secure than wood or a chain-link fence. If you want to keep your building or home safe, go for the thicker precast concrete wall.

Because you want the scale of your barrier to match the scale of the property, a wall is the best option for a larger property. Parks, schools, churches, multi-housing units, and office buildings benefit from a precast concrete wall than a fence.

Regardless of which you go with – fence or wall – going with precast concrete will ensure you have a beautiful, functional barrier that will last for decades. Some of the precast concrete fences and walls we have are:

  • BLOCKCRETE
  • CHISELSTONE
  • RUSTICBRICK
  • SMOOTHSTONE
  • WOODCRETE
  • WOODCRETE RAILS
